Studying Cheung Chau South Reclamation Replace Kwai Tsing Container Terminal

The Group’s vision for the redevelopment of the Kwai Tsing Container Terminal is to be a longer-term reclamation site and a long-term replacement for the Kwai Tsing Container Terminal. The Secretary for Development, Mr Wong Wai-lun, described the location of Kwai Tsing as an excellent location and may be the centre of Hong Kong.

Mr Wong stressed that Cheung Chau South itself is not in the Government’s “5+1” reclamation option. The concept of reclamation is to replace the Kwai Tsing Container Terminal in the long run. He said that Kwai Tsing has a good geographical position. “If you put a compass on the map, it may be that Kwai Tsing is really in the heart of Hong Kong.”

Cargo ships are imported from the South

Why can Cheung Chau South be used as a container terminal? Huang Weilun explained that the entry into Hong Kong cargo ships actually entered Hong Kong and South. Cheung Chau South is the southernmost location in Hong Kong. He also said that this study will only obtain very preliminary information on the reclamation of Cheung Chau South. The contents of the reclamation area will be temporarily suspended and will be considered in the preliminary study grant of the Legislative Council early next year.

As for Hei Ling Chau, Wong Wai Lun said that the Government has predicted the reclamation area and based on the analysis of water flow, navigation channel, navigation safety and preliminary marine ecological impact, “to create more, and to reclaim 1,000 hectares of land, will the ecological environment be far behind?” We found that 700 hectares were filled and the ecological impact was not far behind.” However, he stressed that there is currently no timetable for reclamation in Hei Ling Chau.

The public consultation of the Land Supply Task Force is based on the reclamation option, which is based on the reclamation of 1,000 hectares in the artificial waters of the central waters. Huang Weilun described the group report as one of the key points. It will have a very high reference value for the government’s reclamation plan, which is consistent with the 1,000 hectares of reclamation with the public consultation.
