The number of new arrivals and departures in the Chinese New Year fell by half year-on-year

New coronavirus pneumonia is raging, and many areas, including Hong Kong, are on high alert to prevent virus invasion

Hong Kong’s tourism industry has experienced social turmoil for more than half a year. It has already been hit hard and is now affected by the epidemic. According to the Hong Kong Immigration Department, the total number of immigration trips from the 30th (24th) to the 3rd (27th) of the New Year was only 1.62 million, a year-on-year decline of half. The Hong Kong tourism industry went to Che Kung Temple yesterday to pray for blessings and hope that the epidemic will be brought under control as soon as possible to save the tourism industry from the cold winter. Some travel industry representatives pointed out that despite the difficulties, they still support the government’s decision and believe that the partial closure will help strengthen the confidence of Hong Kong in other places.

The Director General of the Hong Kong Tourism Council, Cui Dingbang, and other members of the tourism industry went to Che Kung Temple yesterday to pray

Cui Dingbang said that due to more than 7 months of demonstrations, the number of inbound tour groups is currently close to zero. Many travel agencies have suspended operations for several months, and it is difficult for lost Southeast Asian tourists to return in a short period of time. He believes that after the Spring Festival, more local travel communities will suspend business or even close business.

Cui Dingbang also said that the travel industry has been severely hit by social turbulence and the current epidemic for half a year, and believes that if it is to be closed, it is an unquestionable result. Whether it is closed or not, the industry will support the government’s decision.

Huang Zhiwei, vice chairman of the Hong Kong Travel Agency Proprietors Association, said that since the outbreak, Hong Kong’s tour groups to Southeast Asia have been cancelled from 20 groups to only 5 groups. More than 20 groups will be cancelled next month. He said that the average monthly loss was 300,000 to 400,000 yuan. He said that the government indicated that the epidemic would be brought under control in May, and he estimated that tourists would not have the confidence to come to Hong Kong in June or July. In the face of many difficulties, he described the tourism industry as having entered a very cold winter, and the industry is now more closed. He hoped that the government could send money and provide subsidies to the industry.

Ye Zhiwei, chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Tourism Practitioners, said that since the social riots, the tourism industry has been the most affected. In addition, tour guides are occupations with a job to earn income, so many experts around them need to work part-time to maintain their livelihoods and wait for the tourism industry to recover. He expressed the hope that the epidemic situation could be brought under control more quickly and that Hong Kong would “fever down” at an early date.

Partial customs clearance strengthens foreign confidence in Hong Kong

Hong Kong Tourism Council Director-General Chen Zhangleyi pointed out that the government’s announcement that Hong Kong will partially close customs will help strengthen confidence in Hong Kong’s epidemic prevention measures.

The fourth day of the new year (28th) is the last day of the Hong Kong Spring Festival holiday. According to the figures of the number of inbound and outbound visitors from the Hong Kong Immigration Department, the number of inbound tourists from the 30th to the third day of the New Year (January 24 to 27) is about 733,000. The figure was approximately 887,000, a year-on-year decline of 2.05 million person-times, a decrease of approximately 55.8%. In addition, the return passenger flow at the West Kowloon Station of the high-speed rail decreased significantly compared with the same period of previous years. The high-speed rail Hong Kong section only had 17,000 trips on the third day of the first three days, a year-on-year drop of 83.2%.

The Tourism Development Bureau announced earlier that due to the storm of amendments, the number of tourists has fallen sharply since July last year, and the overall number of tourists dropped 39% in the second half of the year. The Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Peng Yaojia, said that the Bureau is actively preparing for large-scale publicity in multiple tourist markets around the world to rebuild Hong Kong’s tourism image.
