Landscaping surveyors have a way to go

As soon as the school starts, the sixth-year students will face an important moment in university selection

Have you ever thought about studying some university courses that can become professionals? In recent years, real estate has continued to develop and the demand for professionals in the measurement industry has been quite high. It has also made the surveyor a sought after industry. Is the measurement department only for science students? What scope of work does this profession cover? What is the prospect of work? This time, I invited the surveyor of the Youth Group of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, Lin Manting, to unravel the suspects.

When it comes to professional work in engineering, many people will associate with engineering, architecture and other departments for the first time. In fact, surveying is one of the most demanding professions in recent years.

Literary and art merchants can enter

In addition to personal interests, the future of work is also the reason why many people choose university courses. This is also the portrayal of Lin Manting, the vice chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors Youth Group. She said: “Since the fine has been interested in space design, graphic design, etc., I also liked the book, but I didn’t know the surveyor at that time. I didn’t know the fun of this professional work until the university open day. What’s more, the work is full of challenges and the future is clear. It is aimed at the relevant courses and finally successfully entered the Bachelor of Science (Metrics) course at the University of Hong Kong.”

The surveyors are divided into six major professional groups, including “Land Surveyors”, “Planning and Development Surveyors”, “Industrial Surveyors”, “Building Surveyors”, “Instrumental Surveyors” and “Property and Facilities Management Surveyors”. The scope of work varies. Lin Manting, who is studying science, is not limited to science students: “The relevant undergraduate courses welcome liberal arts and business students to enroll, and they teach comprehensive knowledge, so that students have a preliminary understanding of each major group. The most memorable one during college. Regarding the subject of building survey, I have taught a lot of knowledge related to daily life, such as building regulations and fire prevention regulations, which have made me understand the design reasons of the corresponding buildings and flats.

Market competition for graduates

Lin Manting said that as long as the students complete the undergraduate courses accepted by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, they can obtain the registration qualifications of the relevant professional groups after two years of relevant on-the-job professional training and professional assessment. “In fact, the measurement industry has not been enough people. Every year, graduates are vying to hire. Everyone has a few offers in their hands. There is absolutely no way out. The work of industrial surveyors is mainly based on land development, property valuation, and property investment. At that time, I felt that the profession continued to have a good development in the future, and the treatment was even more impressive. So after graduating from university, I decided to participate in relevant on-the-job training.”

Building surveyors are primarily responsible for the survey of buildings, such as diagnosing defects in buildings and providing advice on repairing buildings.

She has been employed by a developer and is now working in a government department. She is at the challenge of coming to work. “In addition to the surveyors, other surveyors in other professional groups generally have fewer opportunities to land on the market. When I was a developer, I only went to the boss every month to understand the progress of the project. At other times, I was responsible for coordinating roles and consulting with the company. Professionals from different backgrounds, such as lawyers, public relations, sales staff, etc., work together to prepare appropriate documents for relevant projects. Therefore, I feel that language and communication skills are important and the number of rotations must be fast enough to cope with a wide range of contacts.
