Complaints nearly quadrupled last year, 37% of police officers and family members involved in “bottom” weaponized privacy commissioners

Huang Jier said that the Office received a total of 21,574 inquiries and 9,182 complaints last year, 28% and 3.9 times more than the previous year. Among them, 388 inquiries and 4,370 complaints related to bottom-line behavior. There were only 57 online bullying complaints, which was a 75.7-fold increase in complaints last year. Huang Jier further analyzed that as of January 3 this year, 1,597 (37%) involved police officers and their families, followed by those who expressed their support for the government or the police, and 1,303 (30%) were protesters There were 873 cases (20%) and 180 cases involving officials (4%).

1402 cases of police criminal follow-up

The current Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance lacks the power of criminal investigation and prosecution. Therefore, the Office has referred 1,402 cases to the police for criminal investigation. The Office sent a letter to 16 online platforms requesting removal of links to websites involving police officers. All links from local platforms have been removed. As for other areas, the Office has written to the local counterparts, and 70% of the removed links are related to Hong Kong police officers and public officials. He believes that the work of the Office is effective.
